Things to do: 9/18 – Buckets & Beats Youth Block Party

From the Office of Councilmember Kate Stewart:

Our team wanted to share with the Takoma Park Middle School PTA information about our fourth Buckets & Beats event! This is the annual Silver Spring Youth Block Party, taking place Friday, September 18th from 2pm to 6pm at Veterans Plaza in Silver Spring.

Buckets and Beats: The Silver Spring Block Party will include a variety of activities for youth, such as a 3 v 3 basketball tournament, skateboarding, and arts activities. There will also be a number of stakeholders tabling and sharing opportunities for youth. To tie it all together, we will have a live DJ, prizes, and free food to truly make this a block party.
Free Transportation!  We are also very excited to have a RideOn Bus available to students who want to get to and from the event! The RideOn Bus will be stationed at Eastern Middle School (300 University Blvd E, Silver Spring, MD 20901) at 12:30pm, with a departure around 12:45-1pm. The return trip back to Eastern is set to depart around 5:30pm.

8th Graders Only: Save the Date! 

The PTSA will launch our 8th graders into orbit between 7-9 p.m. on Friday, June 12, at Takoma Park Middle School. The “To the Moon Disco Party” will offer pizza, drinks, and space-themed snacks alongside a blacklight party featuring a live DJ, glow gear, and a photo booth to capture the moment. To be inclusive of all, we’ll be hosting a sensory-friendly chill zone, sponsored by xMinds. The PTSA still needs a flight crew to help set-up, chaperone, and break down the event. La PTSA lanzará a nuestros alumnos de 8.º grado a la órbita el viernes 12 de junio, entre las 7:00 y las 9:00 p. m., en la Takoma Park Middle School. La «Fiesta Disco: ¡Rumbo a la Luna!» ofrecerá pizza, bebidas y aperitivos con temática espacial, junto con una fiesta bajo luz negra que contará con un DJ en vivo, accesorios luminosos y un fotomatón para inmortalizar el momento. Para garantizar la inclusión de todos, habilitaremos una zona de descanso sensorialmente amigable, patrocinada por xMinds. La PTSA aún necesita una «tripulación de vuelo» que ayude con el montaje, la supervisión y el desmontaje del evento. 30 members of the school community including 7 Board Members and TPMS administration attended the meeting. No students identified themselves during the meeting. 

 

Welcome!

Chris welcomed the PTSA Board, TPMS administrators, and members of the TPMS community to our April meeting. He turned it over to Ramata to offer a Spanish language translation if anyone needed it. No members in attendance indicated a need.

Outdoor Education – 6th Grade

Ms. Soriano has sent out information in multiple ways: there are slides and recordings. At this point, your child should have come home with a packet. Registration forms are due by April 24. Medication forms are due April 17. It’s really important for students to get these forms turned in on time. The cost is $85 – however if there is a financial need, please reach out to Ms. Soriano, your student’s counselor, or Ms. M-C. Cost should not be a barrier for any student to not attend. 

 

We Shine Night

Mr. Einhorn shared information on the WeShine Student Projects. The night is a combination of show and tell and talent show. Some 6th graders will share their Genius Projects, others will share art, poems, and the Drama Club will present some selections from the recent Musical Mean Girls. Mr. Einhorn said it’s a great night and encourages all students and caregivers to attend, even if their student is not sharing. There will be presentations on saving the ocean, importance of bees, multimedia videos, coding, cell analogy, and more! 

 

8th Grade End of Year Activities

8th grade trip to Kings Dominion

Please note that detailed information went out to students and caregivers after this meeting (Note: information went out Tuesday, April 14). Ms. Patterson-Breese gave members of the TPMS community a heads up on information on the trip to Kings Dominion in Doswell, VA. The trip will be Thursday, June 11, 2026. Departure will be 9:00 at TPMS and return at 7:30 PM. She asked that caregivers make sure they have a plan for getting their student home. There will be an upcoming Town Hall with all 8th grade students to set expectations for the rest of the year to display STRIVE values while at school. If financial assistance is needed, please contact Ms. Patterson-Breese. Cost should not be a barrier for any student to not attend.  

8th Grade Promotion – Monday, June 15 @5:30pm at Blair High School

Students should report to Blair at  5:00 p.m. directly from home. Transportation will not be provided from Takoma Park Middle School to Blair High School.  The ceremony will begin promptly at 5:30 pm, and we ask that invited caregivers and guests arrive by 5:00 pm.  

Promoting 8th grade students do not need an entrance ticket to the ceremony, but their invited guests must present tickets at the door in order to gain admittance. Each student will receive up to four Promotion Ceremony tickets for guests. The tickets for guests will be distributed in school to students, closer to the ceremony date. If you need additional tickets, there will be a form where you can request additional tickets – this will be a lottery for the extra tickets. Note: the gym DOES NOT have AC. It will be very warm: dress and plan accordingly. 

 

General TPMS Updates

Mr. Loznak acknowledged the 6th grade incident from last week where a student brought a pellet gun to school. He said that anything brought to school – a BB gun, pellet gun, a plastic gun that looks like a weapon – is taken very seriously. He said that it’s hard to have to write these types of emails to the TPMS community and understands that it’s upsetting for caregivers and students. He said he would discuss next steps when someone makes a threat.  

Tomorrow, during the STRIVE day, there will be a lesson on: if you see/hear something, say something. The school wants to make sure that students know that if they see or hear anything, they should report it to a trusted adult. One way we can all keep our students safe is to make sure they have people in their lives they trust and can talk to. If they have adults they can trust – parent, teacher, counselor – they are more likely to share. We want to make sure that families and caregivers understand how important these relationships are. 

Administration went into every classroom on the student’s schedule and made sure that students knew it was ok to share. The administrators also shared that there are varying ways to share information: they could ask to use the bathroom and find an adult, send an email, try to discreetly tell the teacher, if the situation is safe. One student asked the administration how they were supposed to know if the pellet gun was real. The message is that it doesn’t matter – it’s not the student’s job to find that out. If they suspect anything regarding weapons and or violence, they should report it to an adult. ANY weapon (toy/actual) brought to school has consequences.

 As with any serious incident, a behavior threat assessment is performed. There are different tiers to the assessment per MCPS: Link. 

A safety plan is also conducted with student before they return – how do we keep everyone in the school safe. This could include a plan for victims and or the student who did the action. This could include where they can walk in the hallway, where they are at lunch, and other actions. There could also be times when the student has to check in with a specific adult, including counselor or administrator. The school focuses on mental health as well as physical safety, including asking how the student was feeling last night and or physically checking their backpack and coat. The school also helps those impacted with therapeutic services, food, and other services as needed. In this instance, the school is also in contact with local police as a weapon was involved. Mr. Loznak reminded members in the meeting that each situation is different and the plan in place is always tailored to the students involved. The room was opened for questions. No members of the meeting had any questions. Mr. Loznak reminded families that privacy is important in these situations and if anyone has additional questions or concerns, to reach out to him. 

 

Budget Update

Mic presented a budget update. Books and Basketball brought in a very successful $2780.5. We have raised more than we expected for the year – thank you to everyone who has supported TPMS PTSA! We have spent only 31% of our proposed budget at this point. We have been behind in some MD Department of Assessments and Taxation Annual Report/Personal Property Return for 2023-2026. And behind in filing Articles of Revival. These important PTSA documents were filed. Filing these documents and getting the PTSA back into full MD state compliance was a major goal for this year’s PTSA Board. Filing these documents puts us on that path. 

 

PTSA Board Positions for 2026-2027 School Year

Becca presented some of the many PTSA positions that we need filled for next school year. If you have other ideas for the Board, we are open to other positions. 

 

The roles in BOLD with an * are positions where we need people to fill positions (either the position is currently empty, or a current Board member will not be returning). Please note, you can also run for positions that are not in bold (for example, a current Board member plans to return). For example: Emily, current TPMS Board President, has said in the past that she will run again for next year’s board; and people can feel free to run against her. We really need a community to run the PTSA and have successful transitions from year to year. Next year that could mean someone stepping into the executive Vice President Role who could possibly become the President the next year. Questions? Therefore, we’re specifically looking for an Exec VP interested in taking on the role of President in the following year, or at least who can be a knowledge keeper to future PTSA presidents. Any president makes the role with the time and energy available to them, but knowing some key pieces (rather than learning from scratch), makes the role much easier to perform. Consider joining me next year in this very important and incredibly rewarding role!

8th Grade Dance Committee Needed

Have an 8th grader, or a 7th grader?  We need you to help continue this school tradition.  It’s so much fun to see these kids engage in this epic rite-of-passage!  We’ve tentatively booked Friday, June 12th for the 8th grade promotion dance (this dance is for 8th graders only).  

  • This event depends on someone to lead it (or it will be cancelled)!  The PTSA will book the dj and photobooth, provide a budget and support.  
  • What’s needed?  Choose a theme, order decorations, select the drinks and  snacks, organize the parent chaperones, and of course, be there on June 12.

Join Us to Learn the Latest on Special Ed Services, Staffing and Support

The Division of Specialized Support Services will hold a webinar for families from 6-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, focused on what’s new in special education services, staffing and supports — and why. MCPS special education leaders will provide context for what this means for schools and classrooms. The session will be held virtually, featuring a brief presentation followed by questions and answers. More details, including the Zoom link for the meeting, will be shared in the coming weeks.

La División de Servicios de Apoyo Especializados llevará a cabo un seminario web para familias de 6 a 7:30 p. m. El miércoles 6 de mayo se centró en las novedades en servicios, personal y apoyos de educación especial, y por qué. Los líderes de educación especial de MCPS brindarán un contexto de lo que esto significa para las escuelas y las aulas. La sesión se llevará a cabo virtualmente y contará con una breve presentación seguida de preguntas y respuestas. En las próximas semanas se compartirán más detalles, incluido el enlace de Zoom para la reunión.

Tomorrow: Monthly PTSA Meeting (Zoom)

Join us on Tuesday, February 10, from 7-8:30 pm over Zoom. Among the topics on our agenda is a focus on Gen AI. A panel discussion will include TPMS students and counselors moderated by TPMS parent and former Common Sense Media researcher, Amanda Lenhart. TPMS Parent Ruth Masterson will also walk us through available Digital Literacy resources. We will also hear from Mr. Loznak about ongoing work that came out of your feedback from the School Climate survey. 

Friday: Black History Month Celebration  

February is Black History Month, and to celebrate the PTSA is sponsoring an all grade assembly on February 13 showcasing African drumming circles during the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th periods of the school day. We’ve done this before and it’s always a hit. Be sure to ask your kiddo about it on Friday evening!

 

Friday: Multicultural Night 

Our beloved Multicultural Night event celebrating all of the places everyone in the TPMS family is from is Fri, Feb 13 from 6-8pm in the Cafeteria.   Please join us for this event!

Your student can earn 7 SSL hours by creating a performance or table display about their country or cultural heritage.

Books and Basketball is Coming Soon

We Still Need Your Books Donations – Drive to School Saturday February 14 to Drop Off Your Books.

We are now only three weeks away from the 2026 edition of Books & Basketball (February 27-28) and we still need your book donations! Thanks to those who have already dropped books. As a reminder, we are interested in all types of books (picture books, first readers, chapter books, Young adults, fiction, nonfiction, cookbooks, travel books, etc). There are several ways you can still donate books:

Now that the school has re-opened, the box outside the main office is waiting for your donations. The box will be there until February 27. You can also drive by on our second special drop-off window on Saturday February 14 (10 am to 1 pm) and drop your boxes by the school. We will be there to receive them. You can always drop books on my porch, 409 Beech Avenue (celineallard@yahoo.com) or on the porch of 902 Gist Ave , Silver Spring (summersmith100@gmail.com)

SpED Autism Resource Services (ARS) Program Advocacy

We are hoping you can amplify a message that has been sent to the BOE and Superintendent regarding our ARS (and LAD) programs at TPMS. MCPS has been cutting back on resources negatively impacting these programs.  And when those programs receive cuts, it impacts EVERYONE in our school in a myriad of ways, seen and unseen. Please take a moment to read the blog post, and two minutes to send the email (or one of your own) amplifying the message to the BOE and Superintendent.

MCPS’s Office of Technology and Innovation encourages families to use this form is to report unapproved websites that are accessed by MCPS students (for example, gaming websites that students are accessing by bypassing MCPS’s internet filters. OTI will investigate the website(s) and block access, as appropriate.

Mañana: Reunión mensual de la PTSA (Zoom)

Los libros y el baloncesto llegarán pronto

Todavía necesitamos sus donaciones de libros: conduzca a la escuela el sábado 14 de febrero para dejar sus libros.

¡Estamos a solo tres semanas de la edición 2026 de Libros y Baloncesto (27 y 28 de febrero) y todavía necesitamos sus donaciones de libros! Gracias a los que ya dejaron caer los libros. Como recordatorio, nos interesan todo tipo de libros (libros ilustrados, de primera lectura, libros de capítulos, para adultos jóvenes, ficción, no ficción, libros de cocina, libros de viajes, etc.). Hay varias formas de donar libros:

Ahora que la escuela ha reabierto, la caja afuera de la oficina principal está esperando sus donaciones. La caja estará allí hasta el 27 de febrero. También puede pasar por nuestra segunda ventana especial de entrega el sábado 14 de febrero (de 10 am a 1 pm) y dejar sus cajas en la escuela. Allí estaremos para recibirlos. Promoción del programa de Servicios de Recursos para el Autismo (ARS) de SpED

Esperamos que pueda ampliar un mensaje que se envió a la BOE y al Superintendente con respecto a nuestros programas ARS (y LAD) en TPMS. MCPS ha estado recortando recursos que impactan negativamente estos programas. La Oficina de Tecnología e Innovación de MCPS alienta a las familias a utilizar este formulario para informar sitios web no aprobados a los que acceden los estudiantes de MCPS (por ejemplo, sitios web de juegos a los que los estudiantes acceden sin pasar por los filtros de Internet de MCPS). Black History Month

February is Black History Month, and the PTSA hopes everyone finds opportunities to celebrate, educate, and inspire with others throughout our community. 

NEXT TUESDAY: Monthly PTSA Meeting

Join us on Tuesday, February 10, from 7-8:30 pm over Zoom. Among the topics on our agenda is a focus on Gen AI. A panel discussion will include TPMS students and counselors moderated by TPMS parent and former Common Sense Media researcher, Amanda Lenhart.  TPMS Parent Ruth Masterson will also walk us through available Digital Literacy resources.  We will also hear from Mr. Loznak about ongoing work that came out of your feedback from the School Climate survey. 

 

NEW DATE: Multicultural Night is being rescheduled, date TBD

Our beloved Multicultural Night event celebrating all of the places everyone in the TPMS family will be rescheduled due to the extended snow days. While the date is being decided, consider how you will participate!

Your student can earn 7 SSL hours by creating a performance or table display about their country or cultural heritage.

Books and Basketball is Coming Soon

We still need your book donations! Thanks to those who have already dropped books, including on Saturday ten days ago for our special drop-off window. We take all types of books (picture books, first readers, chapter books, Young adults, fiction, nonfiction, cookbooks, travel books, etc). There are several ways you can still donate books:

  • As soon as the school reopens, the box outside the main office will be there waiting for your donations. The box will be there until February 27.
  • You can drive by on our second special drop-off window on Saturday February 14 (10 am to 1 pm) and drop your boxes by the school. We will be there to receive them.
  • You can also let your friends and neighbors know if they have books to donate. If you collect books from your neighbors, you can contact me (celineallard@yahoo.com) and I can come and pick them up, if that helps.
  • You can always drop books on my porch, 409 Beech Avenue or on the porch of 902 Gist Ave, Silver Spring (summersmith100@gmail.com)

Around mid-February, we will also send a call for volunteers to help during the event and for bake goods donations.

 

Advocacy from Your PTSA

Traffic Observations at Pickup/Dropoff

At our January PTSA meeting, Kayci-Ann from the City of Takoma Park presented the observations from the October 8, 2025 review. The review looked at two locations including at pickup and drop off to see what a typical day at TPMS is like related to the movement of our students.  

 

SpED Autism Resource Services (ARS) Program Advocacy

We are hoping you can amplify a message that has been sent to the BOE and Superintendent regarding our ARS (and LAD) programs at TPMS. MCPS has been cutting back on resources negatively impacting these programs.  And when those programs receive cuts, it impacts EVERYONE in our school in a myriad of ways, seen and unseen. Please take a moment to read the blog post, and two minutes to send the email (or one of your own) amplifying the message to the BOE and Superintendent.

MCCPTA Delegates Assembly Passes Resolution on Technology and AI

On January 27, 2026, the Montgomery County Council of PTAs (MCCPTA) Delegates Assembly, representing well over 100 PTA units in Montgomery County Public Schools, voted unanimously to approve the “MCCPTA Resolution on Intentional, Effective, and Safe Use of Technology, including Artificial Intelligence, in MCPS Schools” presented by the MCCPTA Technology Committee. 

The resolution was approved on the heels of Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) closure of public comments on its revised technology policy, Policy IGS, Emerging Technologies in Education, on January 26, as well as the release of the MCCPTA Technology Committee’s report summarizing results of a district-wide survey: Community Feedback on School Chromebook Use.

View MSDE Math Policy in Advance

MSDE has released a Math Policy that reimagines how students become college and career ready. One part of the Math Policy requires the implementation of the Numeracy Development Framework. This identifies competencies for PreK-8 mathematics that students need to know each year. If you are interested in viewing the framework in advance, you can use this link for direct access. Additional messages from MCCPTA President, Brigid Howe

  1. Please remember that safe routes to school are a shared responsibility! Please look out for students on roads because sidewalks aren’t plowed, or at bus stops that are icebergs. Drive slowly around your school parking lots and be aware that lanes may shift and change. (Also, thank you to Einstein Cluster Coordinator Rebekah Kuschmider for suggesting in a chat that the county send out an Alert Montgomery notice saying just that – I was able to reach out to someone in the County government who made that happen tonight! It’s great to see even a small impact from our work to keep kids safe).
  2. If you have the opportunity, remember to thank your building services teams. They have been working so hard and as those of us who shoveled our own driveways know, it was backbreaking work. Additionally, thank bus drivers – they’ve been cleaning up the depots so buses are ready to go tomorrow — and thank the Department of Food and Nutrition Services – they worked so hard before and during the closure to ensure kids could pick up meals.
  3. Finally, tomorrow at 1:30 the Council will have an oversight hearing about the snow response – you should consider watching it and also submitting questions to councilmembers in advance.

¡Libros y Baloncesto llegará pronto!

¡Todavía necesitamos sus donaciones de libros! Gracias a quienes ya han donado libros, incluyendo a quienes los entregaron el sábado hace diez días durante nuestro horario especial de recepción. Aceptamos todo tipo de libros (libros ilustrados, libros para primeros lectores, libros de capítulos, libros para jóvenes, ficción, no ficción, libros de cocina, libros de viajes, etc.). Hay varias maneras de donar libros:

  • Tan pronto como la escuela reabra, la caja ubicada fuera de la oficina principal estará allí esperando sus donaciones. La caja estará disponible hasta el 27 de febrero.

La Asamblea de Delegados de MCCPTA aprueba una resolución sobre tecnología e inteligencia artificial

El 27 de enero de 2026, la Asamblea de Delegados del Consejo de Asociaciones de Padres y Maestros del Condado de Montgomery (MCCPTA), que representa a más de 100 asociaciones de padres y maestros en las Escuelas Públicas del Condado de Montgomery, votó por unanimidad para aprobar la “Resolución de MCCPTA sobre el uso intencional, efectivo y seguro de la tecnología, incluida la inteligencia artificial, en las escuelas de MCPS”, presentada por el Comité de Tecnología de MCCPTA.

ጥር 27፣ 2026፣ በሞንትጎመሪ ካውንቲ የህዝብ ትምህርት ቤቶች ውስጥ ከ100 በላይ የPTA ክፍሎችን የሚወክሉ የሞንትጎመሪ ካውንቲ የPTAዎች ምክር ቤት (MCCPTA) ተወካዮች ጉባኤ፣ በMCCPTA የቴክኖሎጂ ኮሚቴ የቀረበውን “በMCPS ትምህርት ቤቶች ውስጥ አርቲፊሻል ኢንተለጀንስን ጨምሮ ሆን ተብሎ፣ ውጤታማ እና ደህንነቱ የተጠበቀ የቴክኖሎጂ አጠቃቀምን በተመለከተ የMCCPTA ውሳኔ” በሙሉ ድምጽ ለማፅደቅ ድምጽ ሰጥቷል።

ውሳኔው የተፀደቀው በጥር 26 የሞንትጎመሪ ካውንቲ የህዝብ ትምህርት ቤቶች (MCPS) በተሻሻለው የቴክኖሎጂ ፖሊሲ፣ IGS፣ በትምህርት ውስጥ ያሉ አዳዲስ ቴክኖሎጂዎች ላይ የህዝብ አስተያየቶችን በመዘጋቱ እንዲሁም የMCCPTA ቴክኖሎጂ ኮሚቴ የዲስትሪክት አቀፍ የዳሰሳ ጥናት ውጤቶችን የሚያጠቃልል ሪፖርት በመውጣቱ ምክንያት ነው፡ በትምህርት ቤት Chromebook አጠቃቀም ላይ የማህበረሰብ ግብረመልስ።

Send us your input on the MCPS Boundary and Programming Analysis

Last week at our PTSA Meeting we presented an overview of the MCPS Boundary and Programming Analysis, we also created a blog page with linked information about this on our site and a whatsapp group for this topic. 

We also shared that our parent organization MCCPTA has drafted a resolution to demanding MCPS take more time for the programming analysis to take place.  MCCPTA is seeking input and feedback on this resolution.  To better serve TPMS families, we’ve created a form for you to share your thoughts on this resolution, and any other feelings you may have about the programming and boundary study you think we should know.  We will vote on the resolution based on your feedback.

Feedback Needed: PTSA membership drive

Thanks to all of you, we met 100% of our PTSA membership goal with our membership drive that ended 10/1. 

 

Needed: Two volunteers needed for budget audit

We need 2 more volunteers to do a review of the PTSA budget from last year l, as a requirement to keep our PTSA in good standing. This is a one-time commitment of a few hours. Please email beccaj@gmail.com if you’d be willing to do this.

Here’s what your PTSA is planning for the TPMS community in 2024-25 school year!

  • Oct 8, Jan 13, Mar 11, and May 6 | Four in-person PTSA Meetings designed to be  useful, and create opportunities to connect with other families, Principal Martin and staff
  • Nov 15  |  An International Night showcasing foods and performances from the many countries and ethnicities we’ve all come from 
  • Dec 6 and Dec 7 |  Winter socials for 7th and 8th grade families (6th grade families had a welcome picnic in
  • Feb 28-29 |  Our biggest, awesomest event of the year Books and Basketball.  Spanning two days   students will square off against teachers in a basketball game to remember.  At the same time, we’ll be having a used book sale, silent auction, games and more!  This is a great event you won’t want to miss.
