MCCPTA News & Requests

MCCPTA is the district-wide PTA that TPMS’ PTA roles up into.  This is the space for the primary forms of advocacy work that can be done at a district level. Including conversations around curriculum, policy, etc. Pay attention to this space to learn more about what is happening in the district that affects you.

Noticias y solicitudes de la MCCPTA

La MCCPTA es la asociación de padres y maestros (PTA) a nivel de distrito a la que está afiliada la PTA de TPMS. Este es el espacio dedicado a las principales iniciativas de defensa y representación que se llevan a cabo a nivel de distrito, incluyendo conversaciones sobre el plan de estudios, las políticas escolares, etc. Manténgase al tanto de este espacio para informarse sobre los acontecimientos del distrito que le afectan.

We are excited that school is back in session and looking forward to a great school year with our fantastic Takoma Park Middle School (TPMS) school community. Below you’ll find important information about our PTSA and more!

 

Become a Member, Donate and Learn More About the PTSA!

Last year we hit a goal of having 20% of TPMS families become PTSA members. This year, we’re hoping to meet and beat that goal. Become a member and make a commitment to your child’s school experience by building the school community and enriching their school life, while advocating for all students at TPMS. To fund events, activities, enrichment opportunities, teacher appreciation, and more, we invite you to donate any amount that is comfortable to your family (please note that donation is not a barrier to becoming a member).

Middle school is a big transition—and the experiences our kids have at school matter. The TPMS PTSA works to make those experiences richer, more welcoming, and more connected for every student.

Special Thank You and Acknowledgements!

The PTSA has been busy helping get this school year underway. Let’s celebrate the efforts of those who are helping make it happen!

Thank you to everyone who came out for our Welcome Back to School Picnic Potluck on Friday, Aug 21. This was such a huge success that we had a 50% increase in attendance from the previous year! This event couldn’t have happened without our board members bringing it to life, including: Ramata Diop, Summer Lingard-Smith, Mic Murphy, Melanie Stickle, Heather Brown-Palsgrove, and Chris Campbell. Plus the many additional volunteers and student volunteers who helped us set-up, clean-up serve food, and more! Thank you for your time and energy – it takes a village!

On August 17th, Teacher Appreciation Committee lead, Alisa O’brien, welcomed teachers & staff with a lovely “Welcome Back Breakfast” to kick off their work for the year. Thanks Alisa for always making these experiences special!  We are also fortunate to have the support of our business community. Thank you KOMA, Takoma BevCo and Spring Mill for your generous discounts and donations!

A special thanks to PTSA VP Beth Dunford and President Emily Modde for putting together the Transition Day Parent Coffee helping new families to TPMS navigate their new school community. We love creating opportunities for parents and caregivers to meet and connect with the school and each other.

¡Un agradecimiento especial y reconocimientos!

La PTSA ha estado muy activa ayudando a poner en marcha este año escolar. ¡Celebremos los esfuerzos de quienes están ayudando a hacerlo posible!

Gracias a todos los que asistieron a nuestro picnic de bienvenida (con comida compartida) el viernes 21 de agosto. ¡Fue un éxito tan grande que la asistencia aumentó un 50 % con respecto al año anterior! Este evento no habría sido posible sin los miembros de la junta directiva que lo hicieron realidad, entre ellos: Ramata Diop, Summer Lingard-Smith, Mic Murphy, Melanie Stickle, Heather Brown-Palsgrove y Chris Campbell. ¡Además de los numerosos voluntarios adicionales y estudiantes voluntarios que nos ayudaron con el montaje, la limpieza, el servicio de comida y más! Gracias por su tiempo y energía; ¡se necesita de toda una comunidad!

El 17 de agosto, Alisa O’Brien, líder del Comité de Aprecio a los Maestros, dio la bienvenida a los docentes y al personal con un encantador “Desayuno de Bienvenida” para iniciar sus labores del año. ¡Gracias, Alisa, por hacer siempre que estas experiencias sean especiales! Un agradecimiento especial a la vicepresidenta de la PTSA, Beth Dunford, y a la presidenta, Emily Modde, por organizar el café para padres durante el Día de Transición, ayudando así a las nuevas familias de TPMS a conocer su nueva comunidad escolar. 8th Grade Dance Recap and THANK YOU!

Last Friday night, June 12, the PTSA threw an epic Dance Party to celebrate our 8th graders launching them into High School. It’s amazing to see 200+ 8th graders dancing and singing together, and cementing their friendships. What a great group of kids!  

Events like these don’t run themselves; it takes some vision, planning, preparation and then making it happen with a team of people contributing in large and small ways. This year’s dance was led by Meg Kiernan, who did all this without breaking a sweat. If you are going to tonight’s Promotion and you see Meg, please give her a huge thank you.

If you’re a parent/caregiver of a rising 8th grader, please consider leading next year’s 8th grade dance party. Resumen del baile de 8.º grado y ¡GRACIAS!

La noche del viernes pasado, 12 de junio, la PTSA organizó un baile espectacular para celebrar a nuestros alumnos de 8.º grado y despedirlos en su camino hacia la escuela secundaria superior (High School). Es maravilloso ver a más de 200 alumnos de 8.º grado bailando y cantando juntos, fortaleciendo sus amistades. ¡Qué grupo de chicos tan fantástico!

Eventos como este no se organizan solos; requieren visión, planificación y preparación, además de llevarlos a cabo con un equipo de personas que contribuyen de diversas formas, grandes y pequeñas. El baile de este año estuvo a cargo de Meg Kiernan, quien lo organizó con gran soltura y eficacia. Si asisten a la ceremonia de promoción esta noche y ven a Meg, por favor, denle las gracias.

Si usted es padre, madre o tutor de un alumno que pasará a 8.º grado el próximo año, considere la posibilidad de organizar el baile de esa generación. ባለፈው አርብ ምሽት፣ ሰኔ 12፣ የPTSA የ8ኛ ክፍል ተማሪዎቻችን ወደ ሁለተኛ ደረጃ ትምህርት ቤት እንዲገቡ ለማስጀመር ታላቅ የዳንስ ድግስ አዘጋጅቷል። ከ200 በላይ የ8ኛ ክፍል ተማሪዎች አብረው ሲጨፍሩና ሲዘፍኑ ማየት እና ጓደኝነታቸውን ሲያጠናክሩ ማየት አስደናቂ ነው። እንዴት ያለ ድንቅ የልጆች ቡድን ነው!

እንደዚህ አይነት ዝግጅቶች በራሳቸው አይካሄዱም፤ ራዕይ፣ እቅድ ማውጣት፣ ዝግጅት እና ከዚያም በቡድን በቡድን በትንሽም ሆነ በትልልቅ መንገዶች አስተዋጽኦ ማድረግን ይጠይቃል። የዘንድሮው ዳንስ የተመራችው ሜግ ኪርናን ሲሆን ይህንን ሁሉ ሳታቋርጥ አድርጋለች። ዛሬ ማታ ፕሮሞሽን ላይ የምትሄዱ ከሆነ እና ሜግን የምታዩ ከሆነ፣ እባክዎን በጣም አመሰግናለሁ።

The PTSA will launch our 8th graders into orbit between 7-9 p.m. ET on Friday, June 12, at Takoma Park Middle School. 

The “To the Moon Disco Party” will offer pizza, drinks, and space-themed snacks alongside a blacklight party featuring a live DJ, glow gear, and a photo booth to capture the moment. To be inclusive of all, we’ll be hosting a sensory-friendly chill zone, sponsored by xMinds.

The PTSA still needs a flight crew to help set-up, chaperone, and break down the event, volunteer through our signup genius.

Tuesday: Families Invited to Learn About Coming Math Changes

MCPS is moving to a new instructional model focused on building a stronger mathematical foundation and developing confident mathematical thinkers. Beginning next year, MCPS will implement a cluster model for mathematics instruction. Cluster grouping is designed to allow students to move into advanced learning opportunities as they become ready. Classes will be organized to reduce the broad range of instructional levels within a classroom, which will make it more manageable for teachers to plan instruction effectively, differentiate learning experiences, and provide timely support and enrichment for students. This model will begin in 2026-2027 for Grade 4 students only, with additional grade levels the following year. If your child is a rising fourth grader, your school will be in touch soon to share details. MCPS will also host the following community meetings for families to learn more. All meetings are from 7-8:15 p.m.

Martes: Se invita a las familias a aprender sobre los próximos cambios en matemáticas

MCPS está adoptando un nuevo modelo de instrucción centrado en construir una base matemática más sólida y desarrollar pensadores matemáticos seguros. Este modelo comenzará en 2026-2027 solo para estudiantes de 4.º grado, con niveles de grado adicionales el año siguiente. Tuesday: Crossing Guard Appreciation Day

Get Ready for Crossing Guard Appreciation Day! Before the big day, take a moment to talk with your kids about staying safe while walking and biking. Remind them just how important our Crossing Guards are. Tomorrow, June 2, show your appreciation! When you’re on your way to school, thank the Crossing Guards in person and consider giving them a small token of gratitude. At each crossing guard post, tables will be set up to collect cards, flowers, or treats. If everyone participates, our Crossing Guards will truly feel how much their service is valued. Every school day, come rain or shine, they wait cheerfully to help students cross safely. Let’s make this day unforgettable by showering them with kindness and thanks!

The “To the Moon Disco Party” will offer pizza, drinks, and space-themed snacks alongside a blacklight party featuring a live DJ, glow gear, and a photo booth to capture the moment. To be inclusive of all, we’ll be hosting a sensory-friendly chill zone, sponsored by xMinds. The PTSA still needs a flight crew of volunteers to help set-up, chaperone, and break down the event. Volunteer here through this link.

¡Prepárense para el Día de Agradecimiento a los Guardias de Cruce! Antes del gran día, tómense un momento para hablar con sus hijos sobre cómo mantenerse seguros al caminar y andar en bicicleta. Recuérdenles lo importantes que son nuestros guardias de cruce. Mañana, 2 de junio, ¡demuestren su agradecimiento! Cuando vayan camino a la escuela, den las gracias a los guardias de cruce en persona y consideren entregarles un pequeño detalle como muestra de gratitud. En cada puesto de guardia de cruce se instalarán mesas para recibir tarjetas, flores o dulces. Si todos participan, nuestros guardias de cruce sentirán verdaderamente cuánto se valora su servicio. 8th Graders Only: Save the Date! 

The PTSA will launch our 8th graders into orbit between 7-9 p.m. on Friday, June 12, at Takoma Park Middle School. The “To the Moon Disco Party” will offer pizza, drinks, and space-themed snacks alongside a blacklight party featuring a live DJ, glow gear, and a photo booth to capture the moment. To be inclusive of all, we’ll be hosting a sensory-friendly chill zone, sponsored by xMinds. The PTSA still needs a flight crew to help set-up, chaperone, and break down the event. La PTSA lanzará a nuestros alumnos de 8.º grado a la órbita el viernes 12 de junio, entre las 7:00 y las 9:00 p. m., en la Takoma Park Middle School. La «Fiesta Disco: ¡Rumbo a la Luna!» ofrecerá pizza, bebidas y aperitivos con temática espacial, junto con una fiesta bajo luz negra que contará con un DJ en vivo, accesorios luminosos y un fotomatón para inmortalizar el momento. Para garantizar la inclusión de todos, habilitaremos una zona de descanso sensorialmente amigable, patrocinada por xMinds. La PTSA aún necesita una «tripulación de vuelo» que ayude con el montaje, la supervisión y el desmontaje del evento. Wednesday: Bike to School Day

The Takoma Park Police will be leading a voluntary bike escort for students on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, beginning at 7:30 a.m. The escort will assemble at 7620 Maple Avenue and is open to all student riders who wish to join.

The escort will include one marked police vehicle and several officers on bicycles. Riders will gather at the starting location before heading to Piney Branch Elementary School, the first stop on the route, where additional riders are welcome to join. From there, the group will continue down Maple Avenue, turn right onto Philadelphia Avenue, and make a stop at Takoma Park Elementary School. The final destination will be Takoma Park Middle School.

To ensure safety and visibility, additional officers will be stationed along the route. Officers will also be handing out bike safety reflectors to participating students.

 

Wednesday: Webinar on What’s New in Special Education

The Division of Specialized Support Services will hold a webinar for families from 6-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, focused on what’s new in special education services, staffing and supports — and why. MCPS special education leaders will provide context for what this means for schools and classrooms. This virtual session will provide an overview of the new high school regional model, including how each school offers unique opportunities available to all students. We will also clarify how these opportunities differ from specialized, application-only programs.

Please note, you can also run for positions that are not in bold (for example, a current Board member plans to return). For example: Emily, current TPMS Board President, has said in the past that she will run again for next year’s board; and people can feel free to run against her. We really need a community to run the PTSA and have successful transitions from year to year. Gratitude for Teacher Appreciation Week! 

Last week’s “Wicked (the musical)”-themed Teacher Appreciation week was a huge success! During the week we served up breakfast, and lunch, and a popcorn and soda bar treat.  Students made cards for their teachers, and we had fun little surprises throughout the week. Miércoles: Día de ir a la escuela en bicicleta

¡La Semana de Agradecimiento a los Maestros de la semana pasada, inspirada en la temática de “Wicked (el musical)”, fue un rotundo éxito! A lo largo de la semana, servimos desayunos y almuerzos, y ofrecimos un delicioso puesto de palomitas de maíz y refrescos. Los estudiantes elaboraron tarjetas para sus maestros y disfrutamos de pequeñas y divertidas sorpresas durante toda la semana. ¡Sabemos que nuestros maestros sintieron nuestra gratitud! ¿Quieren ver qué sucedió a lo largo de la semana? MCPS ቤተሰቦችን እና ተማሪዎችን እስከ ግንቦት 10 ድረስ በሚከፈተው አመታዊ የዳሰሳ ጥናታችን አማካኝነት ልምዶችዎን እና አመለካከቶችዎን እንዲያካፍሉ ይጋብዛል።

ቀደም ሲል ይህ “የትምህርት ቤት ባህል እና የአየር ንብረት ጥናት” ተብሎ ይጠራ ነበር፣ ነገር ግን ስለ አየር ሁኔታ አይደለም። በትምህርት ቤቶቻችን ውስጥ ስላሎት ልምድ እና እንዴት የተሻለ ማድረግ እንደምንችል ነው። የበለጠ ይወቁ እና የዳሰሳ ጥናቱን ይውሰዱ።

Spring Garden Gala Dance

With the dance coming up this Friday, we’re looking for a few volunteers to help make the event a success! We would greatly appreciate your support in any of the following areas:

  • Set-up: 2–4 volunteers (4:30–5:30 PM)
  • Serving food: 6–8 volunteers (6:00–8:00 PM)
  • Chaperoning: 10 volunteers (6:00–8:00 PM)
  • Clean-up: 4–6 volunteers (8:00–9:00 PM)

If you’re available to help in any capacity, please let us know which role and time work best for you.

 

Teacher Appreciation Week is Apr 27-May 1, 2026! 

Committee Chair, Alisa Obrien, is planning a really great week for our teachers themed on Wicked (the musical)! Help make it happen:

 

8th grade dance committee needed by April 30th!

Have an 8th grader, or a 7th grader? We need you to help continue this school tradition. It’s so much fun to see these kids engage in this epic rite-of-passage! We’ve tentatively booked Friday, June 12th for the 8th grade promotion dance (this dance is for 8th graders only).  

  • This event depends on someone to lead it (or it will be cancelled)! The PTSA will book the dj and photobooth, provide a budget and support.  
  • What’s needed? Choose a theme, order decorations, select the drinks and  snacks, organize the parent chaperones, and of course, be there on June 12.

May PTSA Meeting – Elections!

Our next PTSA meeting will take place on May 12 over Zoom. This meeting will include updates and information, and our annual PTSA Board election. Read on to learn more about positions on the Board and Committees. 

The roles in BOLD with an * are positions where we need people to fill positions (either the position is currently empty, or a current Board member will not be returning). Please note, you can also run for positions that are not in bold (for example, a current Board member plans to return). For example: Emily, current TPMS Board President, has said in the past that she will run again for next year’s board; and people can feel free to run against her. We really need a community to run the PTSA and have successful transitions from year to year. Next year that could mean someone stepping into the executive Vice President Role who could possibly become the President the next year. Questions? Baile de Gala de Primavera

Dado que el baile se celebrará este viernes, ¡buscamos algunos voluntarios para ayudar a que el evento sea un éxito! Agradeceríamos enormemente su apoyo en cualquiera de las siguientes áreas:

¡Se necesita un comité para el baile de 8.º grado antes del 30 de abril!

¿Tienes un hijo en 8.º o 7.º grado? Te necesitamos para ayudar a mantener viva esta tradición escolar. ¡Es muy divertido ver a estos chicos participar en este épico rito de paso! Hemos reservado provisionalmente el viernes 12 de junio para el baile de promoción de 8.º grado (este baile es exclusivo para los alumnos de 8.º grado).

¡Este evento depende de que alguien lo lidere (de lo contrario, se cancelará)! La PTSA se encargará de contratar al DJ y la cabina de fotos, además de proporcionar el presupuesto y el apoyo necesarios.
¿Qué se necesita? Elegir una temática, encargar la decoración, seleccionar las bebidas y los aperitivos, organizar a los padres voluntarios para la supervisión y, por supuesto, estar presente el 12 de junio.

Reunión de la PTSA de mayo: ¡Elecciones!

Nuestra próxima reunión de la PTSA se llevará a cabo el 12 de mayo a través de Zoom. Esta reunión incluirá actualizaciones e información, así como nuestra elección anual de la Junta Directiva de la PTSA. Siga leyendo para obtener más información sobre los cargos en la Junta y en los comités.

Los cargos que aparecen en **NEGRITA** y con un asterisco (*) son puestos que necesitamos cubrir (ya sea porque el cargo está vacante actualmente o porque un miembro actual de la Junta no continuará). Tenga en cuenta que también puede postularse para cargos que no aparecen en negrita (por ejemplo, si un miembro actual de la Junta planea continuar). Por ejemplo: Emily, actual presidenta de la Junta de TPMS, ha manifestado anteriormente que se postulará nuevamente para la Junta del próximo año; y cualquier persona es libre de postularse para competir contra ella. የሚቀጥለው የPTSA ስብሰባችን በግንቦት 12 በZoom ይካሄዳል። ይህ ስብሰባ ዝማኔዎችን እና መረጃዎችን እንዲሁም አመታዊ የPTSA ቦርድ ምርጫችንን ያካትታል። በቦርዱ እና በኮሚቴዎች ውስጥ ስላሉ ቦታዎች የበለጠ ለማወቅ ያንብቡ።
