With a rising 8th grader, next year will be my last year at TPMS. Ensuring board continuity and institutional knowledge will be invaluable to future boards. Therefore, we’re specifically looking for an Exec VP interested in taking on the role of President in the following year – or at least who can be a knowledge keeper to future PTSA presidents. Any president makes the role with the time and energy available to them, but knowing some key pieces (rather than learning from scratch), makes the role much easier to perform. 8th Grade Dance Committee Needed
Have an 8th grader, or a 7th grader? We need you to help continue this school tradition. It’s so much fun to see these kids engage in this epic rite-of-passage! We’ve tentatively booked Friday, June 12th for the 8th grade promotion dance (this dance is for 8th graders only).
- This event depends on someone to lead it (or it will be cancelled)! The PTSA will book the dj and photobooth, provide a budget and support.
- What’s needed? Choose a theme, order decorations, select the drinks and snacks, organize the parent chaperones, and of course, be there on June 12.

Tips for Parents: Raising Resilient Learners in an AI World
Are you concerned about how AI may be impacting your kids but don’t know where to start? Or are you just curious about AI but don’t know much about it?
The Brookings Institution has simple parent tipsheets on a number of helpful AI topics, such as “What is Generative AI and What’s at Stake for Kids?” and “Helping Kids Question What AI Tells Them”. These provide an easy-to-understand introduction to some of the main issues with AI and learning.
For those in search of a deeper dive, listen to this interview with Rebecca Winthrop, who leads the Center for Universal Education at Brookings and co-wrote a report called A New Direction for Students in an AI World.
AI awareness for parents and students is critical, as currently many students have ready access to unvetted AI tools on their school Chromebooks. We invite families to share their experiences and observations about these AI tools directly with us at technology@mccpta.org.
Maryland Legislature Passes Phone-Free Schools Act
On April 11, 2026, the Maryland legislature passed House Bill 525, the Joanne C. Benson Maryland Phone Free Schools Act. The bill mandates that all Maryland school districts create a policy that prohibits the use of “electronic communication devices” (including cell phones, smartwatches, and wireless earbuds) during the entire instructional school day, for K-12, with only limited exceptions relating to disabilities, medical needs, and caregiver duties. The bill now awaits the Governor’s signature, and takes effect on June 1, 2026.
The MCCPTA Technology Committee provided support through its partnership with Distraction Free Schools Policy Project. Anyone who is interested joining future advocacy efforts through the DFS Maryland team, which works on legislative efforts to address the negative impacts of screens in schools, can join by signing the DFS MD Community Letter of Support.

¿Le preocupa cómo la IA puede estar afectando a sus hijos pero no sabe por dónde empezar? ¿O simplemente tienes curiosidad por la IA pero no sabes mucho al respecto?
La Brookings Institution tiene hojas de consejos sencillas para padres sobre una serie de temas útiles sobre IA, como “¿Qué es la IA generativa y qué está en juego para los niños?” y “Ayudar a los niños a cuestionar lo que les dice la IA”. La legislatura de Maryland aprueba la ley de escuelas sin teléfono
