Wednesday: Bike to School Day

The Takoma Park Police will be leading a voluntary bike escort for students on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, beginning at 7:30 a.m. The escort will assemble at 7620 Maple Avenue and is open to all student riders who wish to join.

The escort will include one marked police vehicle and several officers on bicycles. Riders will gather at the starting location before heading to Piney Branch Elementary School, the first stop on the route, where additional riders are welcome to join. From there, the group will continue down Maple Avenue, turn right onto Philadelphia Avenue, and make a stop at Takoma Park Elementary School. The final destination will be Takoma Park Middle School.

To ensure safety and visibility, additional officers will be stationed along the route. Officers will also be handing out bike safety reflectors to participating students.

 

Wednesday: Webinar on What’s New in Special Education

The Division of Specialized Support Services will hold a webinar for families from 6-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, focused on what’s new in special education services, staffing and supports — and why. MCPS special education leaders will provide context for what this means for schools and classrooms. Wednesday: Rising 8th Grade High School Information Session

Hosted by 7th Grade Counseling with Ms. Martinez and Ms. Steinberg SY25/26, you are invited to the Rising 8th Grade High School Information Night on Wednesday, May 6 from 6–7:30 PM. This virtual session will provide an overview of the new high school regional model, including how each school offers unique opportunities available to all students. We will also clarify how these opportunities differ from specialized, application-only programs.

Gratitude for Teacher Appreciation Week! 

Last week’s “Wicked (the musical)”-themed Teacher Appreciation week was a huge success! During the week we served up breakfast, and lunch, and a popcorn and soda bar treat.  Students made cards for their teachers, and we had fun little surprises throughout the week. Miércoles: Día de ir a la escuela en bicicleta

La Policía de Takoma Park encabezará una escolta voluntaria en bicicleta para los estudiantes el miércoles 6 de mayo de 2026, a partir de las 7:30 a. m. La escolta se reunirá en el 7620 de Maple Avenue y está abierta a todos los estudiantes ciclistas que deseen unirse.

¡La Semana de Agradecimiento a los Maestros de la semana pasada, inspirada en la temática de “Wicked (el musical)”, fue un rotundo éxito! A lo largo de la semana, servimos desayunos y almuerzos, y ofrecimos un delicioso puesto de palomitas de maíz y refrescos. Los estudiantes elaboraron tarjetas para sus maestros y disfrutamos de pequeñas y divertidas sorpresas durante toda la semana. ¡Sabemos que nuestros maestros sintieron nuestra gratitud! ¿Quieren ver qué sucedió a lo largo de la semana? With a rising 8th grader, next year will be my last year at TPMS.  Ensuring board continuity and  institutional knowledge will be invaluable to future boards.  Therefore, we’re specifically looking for an Exec VP  interested in taking on the role of President in the following year – or at least who can be a knowledge keeper to future PTSA presidents. Any president makes the role with the time and energy available to them, but knowing some key pieces (rather than learning from scratch), makes the role much easier to perform.  Consider joining me next year in this very important and incredibly rewarding role! 8th Grade Dance Committee Needed

Have an 8th grader, or a 7th grader? We need you to help continue this school tradition. It’s so much fun to see these kids engage in this epic rite-of-passage! We’ve tentatively booked Friday, June 12th for the 8th grade promotion dance (this dance is for 8th graders only).  

• This event depends on someone to lead it (or it will be cancelled)! The PTSA will book the dj and photobooth, provide a budget and support.  
• What’s needed? Choose a theme, order decorations, select the drinks and  snacks, organize the parent chaperones, and of course, be there on June 12.

Tips for Parents: Raising Resilient Learners in an AI World

Are you concerned about how AI may be impacting your kids but don’t know where to start? Or are you just curious about AI but don’t know much about it? 

The Brookings Institution has simple parent tipsheets on a number of helpful AI topics, such as “What is Generative AI and What’s at Stake for Kids?” and “Helping Kids Question What AI Tells Them”. These provide an easy-to-understand introduction to some of the main issues with AI and learning.

For those in search of a deeper dive, listen to this interview with Rebecca Winthrop, who leads the Center for Universal Education at Brookings and co-wrote a report called A New Direction for Students in an AI World. 

AI awareness for parents and students is critical, as currently many students have ready access to unvetted AI tools on their school Chromebooks. We invite families to share their experiences and observations about these AI tools directly with us at technology@mccpta.org.

Maryland Legislature Passes Phone-Free Schools Act

On April 11, 2026, the Maryland legislature passed House Bill 525, the Joanne C. Benson Maryland Phone Free Schools Act. The bill mandates that all Maryland school districts create a policy that prohibits the use of “electronic communication devices” (including cell phones, smartwatches, and wireless earbuds) during the entire instructional school day, for K-12, with only limited exceptions relating to disabilities, medical needs, and caregiver duties. The bill now awaits the Governor’s signature, and takes effect on June 1, 2026.

The MCCPTA Technology Committee provided support through its partnership with Distraction Free Schools Policy Project. Anyone who is interested joining future advocacy efforts through the DFS Maryland team, which works on legislative efforts to address the negative impacts of screens in schools, can join by signing the DFS MD Community Letter of Support.

La legislatura de Maryland aprueba la ley de escuelas sin teléfono

El 11 de abril de 2026, la legislatura de Maryland aprobó el Proyecto de Ley 525 de la Cámara de Representantes, la Ley de Escuelas Gratuitas por Teléfono de Maryland Joanne C. Benson. El proyecto de ley exige que todos los distritos escolares de Maryland creen una política que prohíba el uso de “dispositivos de comunicación electrónicos” (incluidos teléfonos celulares, relojes inteligentes y auriculares inalámbricos) durante todo el día escolar de instrucción, para K-12, con solo excepciones limitadas relacionadas con discapacidades, necesidades médicas y deberes de los cuidadores. Our Silent Auction is now open!

Bidding is now LIVE for the silent auction happening as part of Books & Basketball. • As part of both the basketball game and the book sale, we will be holding a bake sale. Please sign up here to donate baked goods. We would ask you to drop your baked goods either on Friday February 28, 3–5 pm, or Saturday March 1, 9:30–10 am, or Friday by Sarah Corcoran’s place (you can email her at sia2210@yahoo.com for the address).

Ticket sales

• Student tickets are $3 for the basketball game and accompanying adults are free for up to three students. Ticket sales will begin before school the week of February 23 to Feb 27. Ticket sales during the time will be cash or check only.
• Tickets may also be purchased at the door using cash, Venmo, check or Paypal.
• We need parents to help staff the ticket sales in the week up to the game from 7:55 am to 8:15 am. If you can volunteer for that brief time, please sign up here.

Book Donations: If you still have books you would like to donate, here is where you can drop them:

• You can have your child drop them in the box outside the office labeled Book Sale. The box will be there until February 27
• You can also drop your books on the porch at 409 Beech Ave (celineallard@yahoo.com) or on the porch of 902 Gist Ave, Silver Spring (summersmith100@gmail.com).

Books and Basketball is Two Weeks Away

Register to Volunteer and/or Donate Baked Goods (and Books!)

Our annual TPMS Books & Basketball fundraiser is coming in only two weeks, on February 27 and 28! Join us on Friday night at 6 pm for the basketball game and book pre-sale, and on Saturday from 10 am–1 pm in the TPMS cafeteria for our book sale. 

We would welcome your help with any of the following:

• Ticket sales: 
  • Student tickets are $3 for the basketball game and accompanying adults are free for up to three students. Ticket sales will begin before school the week of February 23 to Feb 27. Ticket sales during the time will be cash or check only. 
  • Tickets may also be purchased at the door using cash, Venmo, check or Paypal.
  • We need parents to help staff the ticket sales in the week up to the game from 7:55 am to 8:15 am. If you can volunteer for that brief time, please sign up here.
• Book Donations:
  • We would still love your used books! Please have your child drop them in the box outside the office labeled Book Sale. 
  • You can always drop your books on the porch at 409 Beech Ave (celineallard@yahoo.com) or on the porch of 902 Gist Ave, Silver Spring (summersmith100@gmail.com).
• Volunteers: 
  • While we have some truly awesome volunteers, we need more. If you are able to volunteer either Friday or Saturday, please sign up here to sign up for a shift to help with the basketball game, book sale, bake sale and silent auction.
• Bake Sale:
  • As part of both the basketball game and the book sale, we will be holding a bake sale. Please sign up here to donate baked goods. We would ask you to drop your baked goods either on Friday February 28 3-5 pm or Friday by Sarah Corcoran’s place (you can email her at sia2210@yahoo.com for the address).

On February 22, we’ll open up our Silent Auction online fundraiser!  It’s going to be amazing, so be on the look out for our upcoming Silent Auction. The auction will close at Books & Basketball on Saturday, February 28.

Multicultural Night & Student Assembly a Huge Success!

Dancing, drumming, eating, enjoying incredible performances, and meeting and celebrating our big beautiful TPMS family and all the cultures and places we originate from!  A big show of thanks to Ramata Diop for running such a fantastic Multicultural Night event this year and pulling together this assembly.  And especially to all of our students and families who presented, performed, and provided a taste of the culture!

News from MCCPTA

Listening Session on MCPS’ upcoming Volt AI Pilot

This Thursday, February 19, the MCCPTA Technology Committee will be hosting a listening session on MCPS’ upcoming Volt AI Pilot, currently scheduled to be conducted in 3 schools (Seneca Valley, BCC and Magruder High Schools) beginning in March. While MCPS is still in the process of holding town hall outreach sessions on Volt, we at the Technology Committee have received a number of inquiries and correspondence from parents wanting to learn more, concerned about the privacy implications of the use of (AI) surveillance in schools, etc.  So while we work to try and get more information from MCPS (and hope to attend at least one of the MCPS Town Halls on Volt AI next week), we’re also scheduling this listening session for parents to come and share what they’ve learned about Volt AI from these meetings, raise questions or concerns that they’d like us to consider, and generally compare notes. Families are welcome to attend any time during the one hour session. See below for details!

Libros y Baloncesto: ¡En Dos Semanas!

Inscríbete como voluntario o dona productos horneados (¡y libros!)

¡Nuestra recaudación anual de fondos de TPMS, Libros y Baloncesto, llega en solo dos semanas, el 27 y 28 de febrero! Únete a nosotros el viernes a las 6 p. m. para el partido de baloncesto y la preventa de libros, y el sábado de 10 a. m. a 1 p. m. en la cafetería de TPMS para la venta de libros.

Agradecemos tu ayuda con cualquiera de los siguientes:

Venta de entradas:

Un gran agradecimiento a Ramata Diop por organizar una Noche Multicultural tan fantástica este año y por organizar esta asamblea. ¡Y especialmente a todos nuestros estudiantes y familias que presentaron, actuaron y nos dieron una muestra de la cultura!

Sesión de escucha sobre el próximo programa piloto de IA Volt de MCPS

Este jueves 19 de febrero, el Comité de Tecnología de MCCPTA organizará una sesión de escucha sobre el próximo programa piloto de IA Volt de MCPS, programado para llevarse a cabo en tres escuelas (Seneca Valley, BCC y Magruder High Schools) a partir de marzo. Si bien MCPS aún está realizando reuniones públicas sobre Volt, en el Comité de Tecnología hemos recibido numerosas consultas y correspondencia de padres que desean obtener más información, están preocupados por las implicaciones de privacidad del uso de la vigilancia (IA) en las escuelas, etc. Por lo tanto, mientras trabajamos para obtener más información de MCPS (y esperamos asistir al menos a una de las reuniones públicas de MCPS sobre IA Volt la próxima semana), también estamos programando esta sesión para que los padres compartan lo que han aprendido sobre IA Volt en estas reuniones, planteen preguntas o inquietudes que deseen que consideremos y, en general, intercambien impresiones. በMCPS የቮልት AI የሙከራ ፕሮግራም ላይ የመስማት ክፍለ ጊዜ

በዚህ ሐሙስ፣ የካቲት 19፣ የMCCPTA ቴክኖሎጂ ኮሚቴ በመጋቢት ወር ጀምሮ በ3 ትምህርት ቤቶች (ሴኔካ ቫሊ፣ ቢሲሲ እና ማግሩደር ሁለተኛ ደረጃ ትምህርት ቤቶች) ላይ በMCPS የቮልት AI የሙከራ ፕሮግራም ላይ የማዳመጥ ክፍለ ጊዜ ያካሂዳል። MCPS በቮልት ላይ የከተማ አዳራሽ የማዳመጥ ክፍለ ጊዜዎችን በማካሄድ ላይ እያለ፣ እኛ በቴክኖሎጂ ኮሚቴ ውስጥ ያለን ወላጆች የበለጠ ለማወቅ ከሚፈልጉ ወላጆች በርካታ ጥያቄዎችን እና ደብዳቤዎችን ተቀብለናል፣ በትምህርት ቤቶች ውስጥ የ(AI) ክትትል አጠቃቀም የግላዊነት አንድምታዎች ወዘተ. ስለዚህ ከMCPS የበለጠ መረጃ ለማግኘት ስንሞክር (እና በሚቀጥለው ሳምንት በቮልት AI ላይ ቢያንስ በአንዱ የMCPS የከተማ አዳራሽ ላይ ለመገኘት ተስፋ እናደርጋለን)፣ ወላጆችም መጥተው ስለ ቮልት AI የተማሩትን እንዲያካፍሉ፣ እንድናስብባቸው የሚፈልጓቸውን ጥያቄዎች ወይም ስጋቶች እንዲያነሱ እና በአጠቃላይ ማስታወሻዎችን እንዲያወዳድሩ ይህንን የማዳመጥ ክፍለ ጊዜ ቀጠሮ እንይዛለን። ቤተሰቦች በአንድ ሰዓት ክፍለ ጊዜ ውስጥ በማንኛውም ጊዜ እንዲገኙ እንኳን ደህና መጡ። ለዝርዝሮች ከታች ይመልከቱ!
